2017 Fall Fashion trends, IMHO, are more workplace friendly and complement with this woman’s over-40 style. Why? They reflect intricate and creative design around unexpected proportions, color combinations, and textures. Vogue, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vanity Fair editorials and advertisements featured less bare skin and skinny pants and more mesmerizing prints, cuts allowing for movement, and masculine lines.
After pouring over 1800 pages in the above-mentioned September issues, these are my top picks for adding serious personality to your daily wardrobe. It’s my over-40 style of “from the runway to everyday” with practical styling advice to help you choose which trends work best for you and which trends to avoid. Remember, there’s no such thing as a “must have.”
Fall Fashion Trend #1: Shearling & Faux Fur
Luxuriously touchable and brightly colored furs are a favorite this year. Style tips: Yes, they are bulky, so if you carry a lot of weight in your torso, opt for designs that limit the fur to collars, cuffs, hemlines. Long, uninterrupted lengths also work (wear a high heel if you’re petite). I like blazer length options for bottom heavy or petite women.
Fall Fashion Trend #2: Red Boots
I can’t remember the last time red boots trended like this, which is why I love it. From deep bourdoux to candy-apple red, there’s something for everyone. Embroidered fabrics are the IT thing, and are limited. Get them while you can.
Fall Fashion Trend #3: Trench… Everything
We’ve come a long way from the bland khaki trench of the 1980s. Style tips: Double-breasted designs will widen the torso, so avoid that style if you want to slim down through the chest and midsection. Darker colors will also slim through that region– but it doesn’t have to be black! Dark greens and blues are fantastic options.
Fall Fashion Trend #4: Heavenly bodies
Stars are happy. Adding a little whimsy to your outfit can brighten your mood and generate compliments (“How fun!” my friend Linda always says). Style tips: Place these shiny, eye-catching shapes where you want to draw the eye. Have great stems? Stars on your jeans! Love your neck and shoulders? A statement star necklace is a show stopper. I recommend mixing them with velvets and deep gemstone colors this season.
Fall Fashion Trend #5: Liquid Metals
The future is here in the form of liquid metals. They look dripping wet or that sparkling sheen that was on the old carnival rocket rides. Style tips: These work for the office when the rest of the outfit is more subdued– mainly because adding other prints/embellishments can be too distracting for the eye. Make the silver shoe or gold top the main attraction. Metallics are considered neutral but I err on the side of matching the metal to my skin tone. I have warm skin, so I opt for gold and copper. Someone with cooler, paler skin may find that silver better enhances her natural color scheme. Rose golds mix with most skin tones.
Fall Fashion Trend #6: Houndstooth (and plaid)
Houndstooth and plaid prints are like armor for the office. They are no nonsense and send a message of stability and strength due to their masculine associations. Style tip: Pair the plaid dresses or trousers with bell-sleeve tops for that added feminine flare. Large plaid prints widen an area, so choose a small to medium print to avoid adding visual volume to your silhouette. And why not add a standout brooch– I’ve seen quite a few gems like golden tigers and pearl/gold safety pins.
