Who vacations in NYC in January? ME! My honey surprised me with a birthday weekend trip (he’s the best). And what a trip it was. We hit fancy French restaurants, visited the Jacqueline de Ribes couture dress exhibit, and strolled through Central Park as kids sledded past screaming joyfully.
I’ve lived in Texas weather so long (it’s 70 degrees as I type) that current cold-weather outerwear fashion captured my attention. These three re-occuring trends popped up everywhere– from the Meatpacking District to the Upper West Side and every subway platform in between. They are “The 3 P’s of Winter City Chic.” They’re #over40 friendly and fun!
Puffer (or Puffy) Jackets
In the 1980’s I looked like the Michelin Man in a puffer jacket. Thank God the puffer jacket has evolved. New Yorkers do it right. Here are a collection of puffer jackets for any budget. If you have broad shoulders and/or a large chest, opt for a thinner “puff” in a dark color like navy, alpine green, merlot, cinnamon, or ebony.
How can anyone be sad when sporting a pom-pom? It’s impossible! They’re like non-addictive happy pills. Pom-poms on hats, on boots, on hood strings, on handbags and backpacks. Matters not. Just buy one and wear it! New Yorkers love their fur/faux fur options the most. I found these lovelies that you can get with just a click.
The thought of platform shoes in melting snow and ice sounds dangerous, right? That’s why serious traction is a must. Timberlands are the go-to for women *and* men in NYC. Any brand that offers a “trekking” sole for city sludge hikes and laces will work. Get a pair from this collection of cool platforms I found. If you have short legs or a triangle body shape, opt for a color that match the pant color you wear most to elongate and balance your silhouette.
