How To Avoid 5 Yoga Pants Fails

Mirrors lie. Sunlight reveals. Cameras are cruel. I can’t imagine the women caught in these yoga pants fails are aware of what’s happening.  These fails happen daily. On the street. Otherwise, I might consider these pics Rated R.  If you find yourself out and about wearing this garment, consider these preventative measures. And always look front/back/side in a mirror!

1.  Cameltoe Prevention. Google it and aside from bathing suits, most pics show women in leggings/yoga pants.  Let’s save ourselves the embarrassment of ending up on http://www.totalprosports.com/2014/04/02/best-ever-yoga-pants-fails-gallery/#6 and take action.  Preventative measures:
— Wear yoga pants that fit you properly. If they’re too tight through the hips or too short for your torso, you’re in trouble.
— Throw on a cute tunic top with a hem that ends at the thigh– hiding any accidental cameltoe peek-a-boos.
— Wear a skirt instead of or over the pants.

2. No More See-Through Fails. Last week my friend Yuri told me he saw a woman in workout leggings at the grocery store who dropped her baked goods (a whole other discussion). When he walked over to help, she bent over and “Hello Kitty!”  Yep, not only could he see through the leggings, she opted not to wear panties because panty lines suck. But(t) not as bad as this visual. Fortunately, he’s a good guy and didn’t snap-post a pic.  Don’t let it happen to you:

— Buy workout leggings that are lined. I like fleece-lined. They’re warm so in the summer you’ll burn more calories 🙂 Ruthy’s Apparel 6 Pack Fleece Lined Leggings Large Multicoloured

— Prints camouflage a lot- try some fun ones like these OmGirl Women’s Snake Charmer Yoga Pants. White is a high-risk color option. Watch out!

— Buy seamless, full bottom panties. Boy shorts are super comfy and cool.

3. Battle the Bulge. Legging fabrics are extremely unforgiving; they happily show every little bump and bulge. I saw this exact phenomenon on a woman *working* at Jiffy Lube yesterday.  Our styling techniques can again come in handy:

— Proper fit!
— Try a folder-over waist to camouflage tummy and back rolls like Alki’i Women’s Cotton Lycra Fold over Yoga Pant

— A tunic top is, again, a great option!

— Boy shorts.
— Avoid leggings and go for terry cloth or lined pants instead. Skirts or skorts!

4. Proportion Distortion. Leggings exaggerate body types, usually to our detriment. Inverted triangles can look like quarterbacks. Rectangles and Ovals can look like double-stick Fudgsicles. A Triangle can look like a squirrel carrying nuts in her thighs.  Ideas for all body types:

— Opt for a straight leg or bootcut design. It will create balance and proportion from upper to lower body. Athleta.com and Avenue.com sell many options.
— Are you a triangle? Wear dark pants like black, brown, navy, olive green. Pair with a light, bright or patterned top to attract the eye upward.
— Are you an inverted triangle? Wear a dark top with light, bright or printed pants. They show off your stems and project so your top half looks slimmer.
— Rectangles and ovals look best when their workout tops and bottoms are the same color. It elongates and slims the midsection by avoiding visible horizontal lines.  Find tops that hit below the widest section of your body and aren’t boxy/oversized (which will add more volume to your midsection).

5.  Say “No” to Sweat Stains.  Yes, this happens even if we’re just running errands.  People can easily mistake it for leakage.  It’s awful no matter how you look at it. So prevent it:

— Wear underwear with wicking properties that pull the moisture away like these Yvette Women Mid-Rise Sports Panties #6040 – Boyshorts/Support/Moisture Wicking

— Pantyliners are discreet and fit easily into a wallet for emergency situations.

— Harem, or “drop crotch” pants work wonders. Try these Popana Harem Yoga Palazzo Pants Pants – Made In USA

— Again, prints help camouflage everything!

Unless I’m on the running trail or at a yoga class, I avoid wearing leggings/workout pants in public now that I’m #Over40.  With all of these “fails” to perry, it’s just not worth the effort or risk to me.  I love the polished illusion that sportswear (not workout wear) affords with a lot less effort.  It’s also a lot of fun to embrace the femininity that workout clothes don’t really offer.
