Over-40 Style: How To Wear Off-The-Shoulder Trend

Donna Karan says “You’re never going to gain weight on your shoulders.” That’s part of the reason why I love the “off-the-shoulder” trend in tops and dresses. Shoulders are sexy without being too revealing. Bare shoulders bring attention up and toward the face — taking the eye away from large thighs or derriere.  (Always a plus, in my book.)  And many of them cover the upper arm flab that many women want to hide. Here are some style tips for over-40 women who want to rock this look.

Ideal for: Triangle, rectangle, and oval body types

— Find a comfortable but effective strapless bra. Or experiment with colorful, sassy bra straps. My friend Amy has a bra with blue sequin straps turn her outfits into a party!

— If you have a DD cup or broad shoulders, this may not be the trend for you. Try cut-out shoulders instead.

— Petite women will want to use a critical eye. Adding horizontal lines and volume to your small frame can make you look shorter and wider. Suggest trying just one side off the shoulder. Or try a boatneck instead. Wearing 2-inch heels or higher will help offset the increase in width by increasing your height.

— A bare neck is sexy, so I suggest going with statement earrings rather than a necklace. However, if you’re a necklace lover, keep the length at the clavicle so it’s not conflicting with the strong shoulder line. You’ll see photos of long tassel necklaces with these looks. Try it if your shoulders look too wide to break up that horizontal line, but it can look awkward — especially with large breasts.

— Heavy handbags can leave ugly shoulder strap marks on your sexy skin.  Lighten the load or simply go for handle designs or clutches.
